Butting heads with the big boys of Web authoring, Jasc Software's Namo WebEditor 5.0 delivers a powerful, easy-to-use design and deployment tool that gives both Macromedia and Microsoft a run for their money.

WebEditor provides a drag-and-drop WYSIWYG interface, an HTML code editor, over 80 templates, 125MB of clip art, and dozens of themes. With WebEditor, even novices can easily create data-based sites.

With the new Layout Tables, you can concentrate on your page's design rather than sweat over nested table code. This feature lets you keep drawing layout cells (the areas where you put text, images, or media resources) without repeated- ly clicking on the object icons. The pop-up toolbox allows quick access to properties of the tables and cells.

The Inspector is a dialog box that sets properties (font size, color, style of image URLs, and links) for tables or the entire document quickly. Though it doesn't cover all objects on a page (as Macromedia's Dreamweaver does), you can still double-click on anything and bring up its property dialog box.

WebEditor's Resource Manager groups all Web page elements in a central repository for easy access. The Resource Manager's collection includes table styles, smart buttons, and color sets, or you can add your own page elements for instant access and reuse.

The program also features a database wizard, a script wizard, and multimedia capabilities. The database wizard supports scripting code in ASP, JSP, and PFP formats to access ODBC, JDBC, and MySQL databases.

The script wizard lets you drop JavaScript elements, such as roll-over buttons, screen effects, or pop-up windows. It also drops the code into your page after you fill out the required parameters.

WebEditor's HTML mode provides full source-code coloring for HTML, but not for scripting. For repeated tasks, you can record keyboard macros, but not mouse selections. We missed code helpers such as Microsoft Intellisense's or Macromedia's Homesite automatic tag matching.
