Designer b michael represents on the runway
Only one Black women's-wear designer showed a fall-winter collection at 7th on Sixth, New York's major fashion event. That solo act was b michael. ESSENCE proudly sponsored the designer's recent presentation. With couture and ready-to-wear collections only two years in the making, b (as he likes to be called) is thrilled he could get his work out there on such a prestigious level. "Showing on 7th is an opportunity to present your point of view to the world," he says. "For weeks I couldn't take the subway without being recognized. I really believe all the press from the show contributed to this being my best season financially." Look for b's modern classics in select Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor stores nationwide.

WRAP STARS
A step-by-step guide to tying one on
Accessory designer Tamu has been regally wrapping heads for 15 years. Her wrap-sacs are designed to provide eight distinct looks, each one flattering and foolproof. We asked her to show us how it's done on our model, Bridgette. (For more of Tamu's headgear, including leather wrap-sacs, visit tamus.com.)
The Knot Using the tails of the fabric, tie a knot behind your head (1, 2). Hold the tied fabric like a ponytail, then wrap the tail in a circular motion around the bunch (3). Tuck tail end into the knot (4).
The Gypsy Using one of Tamu's rectangular wraps, cover the head with the fabric, then hold two pieces like ponytails before tying a knot at the back and letting the ponytail ends fall.
The Turban Using the tails of the fabric, tie a knot behind the head (1). Hold the end pieces at arm's length and wrap remaining fabric around the head (2, 3). Tuck in the ends (4).
