DPT Ships 64-bit PCI Fibre Channel RAID Controller: Extreme Performance and Storage Scaleability for Enterprise-Class Systems

Distributed Processing Technology(R) (DPT(R)), a leading supplier of high-performance SCSI and Fibre Channel RAID solutions for servers and workstations, today announced its new 64-bit SmartRAID(R)V Millennium High Performance Fibre Channel RAID controller is shipping to distribution channel customers worldwide. Available with one or two Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loops, it incorporates new 64-bit PCI bus architecture, effectively doubling the server-controller data path bandwidth. Unparalleled scaleabilty features include the ability to field-upgrade the single loop controller to two loops via a Fibre Channel expansion module.

Market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) of Framingham, MA estimates that Fibre Channel will constitute 40% of the market for workstation and multi-user disk drives by the year 2002. "Storage device connectivity, generous cable length limits, and cabling simplicity are key Fibre Channel attributes propelling its penetration into the storage market," said Roger Cummings, past chair of the NCITS Technical Committee for the development of Fibre Channel standards, and current director of strategic alliances for DPT. Features

The SmartRAID V Millennium PM3755F-16M controller includes an embedded Intel i960 I/O processor, and is I2O and PCI 2.1 compliant with 264 MB/second 64-bit bus mastering. It can control up to 126 Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop devices per loop at a data transfer rate up to 100 MB/second. The controller includes support for JBOD and hardware RAID 0, 1, 5, 0+1, 0+5. 16MB of ECC EDO SIMM cache memory is included with each controller. Cache memory is easily scaled up to 256MB via the controller's four EDO SIMM memory slots. Support is incorporated for SCSI Accessed Fault-Tolerant Enclosure (SAF-TE) and SCSI Enclosure Services (SES) disk subsystem cabinet monitoring and status reporting protocols. The advanced High Speed Serial Data Connector (HSSDC) is used for the external Fibre Channel connection. Other features include flash-upgradable firmware and BIOS, BIOS-based setup and RAID configuration utility, and full-featured GUI configuration and storage management software. Operating system compatibility includes Windows(R) NT(R), Win 95/98, NetWare(R), SCO(R) OpenServer 5, SCO 3.2.4.2, SCO UnixWare(R) 7, UnixWare 2.1.4.2, OS/2(R), and Linux (kernel versions 2.0 and 2.2 including Red Hat(R) Linux 5.2 and 6.0).

The Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of the single-loop controller (PM3755F-16M) is $2,075., and the two-loop controller (PM3755F-2F-16M) is $2,575.
