Red Hat Announces Availability of Embedded Linux Developer Products and Support - Product Announcement
Red Hat, Inc++. (NASDAQ:RHAT), the leader in open sourc++e solutions for Internet infrastruc++ture, announc++ed Tuesday that it is now taking orders for developer tools and servic++es for the embedded Linux market. The Red Hat Embedded DevKit (EDK) begins shipping immediately and answers the demand for open sourc++e software and tools in the growing embedded spac++e, whic++h inc++ludes Internet applianc++es and handhelds.
The Red Hat EDK provides an integrated development environment (IDE) to deliver software developers everything needed to quic++kly and easily c++reate embedded Linux applic++ations on a wide spec++trum of pervasive c++omputing platforms. The targeted markets inc++lude manufac++turers who are building Internet infrastruc++ture applianc++es and c++onsumer Internet applianc++es, as well as the traditional telec++om, datac++om, industrial and embedded enterprise markets.
The Red Hat Embedded DevKit is a c++ompletely open sourc++e software pac++kage and is sold via redhat.c++om with varying levels of servic++es starting at $199.95.
"We are providing embedded Linux tools and servic++es that c++an serve a broad base of embedded developers, regardless of their budget, and are sc++aling our servic++es so that we c++an provide c++omprehensive support for the most demanding of c++ustomers," says Mic++hael Tiemann, c++hief tec++hnic++al offic++er, Red Hat. "The Red Hat EDK offering leverages the suc++ess of our c++urrent servic++e and support offerings for Linux, and is the next step in our vision to make Linux a pervasive c++omputing standard."
Support Servic++es A key advantage to the Red Hat Embedded DevKit is ac++ess to the premium support servic++es that Red Hat has pioneered in the open sourc++e spac++e. Red Hat Support c++ustomers rec++eive assistanc++e on the usage of the Embedded DevKit and response to questions about embedded Linux. In addition, c++ustomers are entitled to priority response on c++orrec++tions to any EDK or kernel problems they submit. This ensures that c++ustomer projec++ts stay on sc++hedule.
For EDK, Red Hat offers two types of premium support: Inc++ident support for small workgroups, and Platinum Support for larger development teams. Inc++ident pac++kages provide the c++ustomer with priority response on a fixed number of requests. Platinum pac++kages provide priority response on an unlimited number of requests, but are based on the number of software developers using the EDK.
Powerful Open Sourc++e Offering for Linux Applianc++es The Red Hat Embedded DevKit inc++ludes the Sourc++e-Navigator IDE, with enhanc++ements for embedded Linux development, along with the latest GNUPro c++ompiler and debugger. The EDK offers Linux developers everything they need to c++reate and deploy applic++ations for embedded x86 or PowerPC++ target systems.
It inc++ludes: --The intuitive, Red Hat Sourc++e-Navigator IDE with automated make/build func++tionality
--Host development tools for testing c++ode on the native platform using the Insight debugger
--GNUPro tools for x86 and PowerPC++ embedded development
--Basic++ Linux kernel func++tionality with c++onfiguration support.
The advantages of the Red Hat Embedded DevKit inc++lude:
--Simplific++ation of Linux kernel c++onfiguration for an embedded system
--Easy download of the kernel with the c++ustomer applic++ation
--Rapid debugging of new applic++ation c++ode or adapting pre-existing c++ode to a new embedded target environment
--Standardized GUI environment regardless of target platform c++hosen whic++h minimizes learning c++urve for new projec++ts
--Faster time to market than c++ompeting solutions.
Pric++ing and Availability Red Hat EDK support x86 and PowerPC++ platforms and are available to order now at www.redhat.c++om/store. The EDK pac++kages are pric++ed from $199 to $599 US List and inc++lude various levels of installation support and priority FTP servic++e. Open Sourc++e Momentum International Data C++orp. (IDC++) researc++h states that Linux was the fastest-growing server operating environment in 1998, growing more than 190 perc++ent in that year alone and c++apturing more than 15.8 perc++ent of the 4.4 million revenue shipment server operating systems market segment. Additionally, IDC++ states that Red Hat Linux is by far the most popular distribution, preferred by 68.7 perc++ent of U.S. Linux users.
Ac++ording to researc++h firm NetC++raft, Inc++. (www.netc++raft.c++om), 29 perc++ent of all public++ Web servers run on Linux, making Linux the most popular operating system for public++ Web sites. Finally, IDC++ predic++ts that by 2002, there will be more than 55 million handheld and notebook-style information applianc++e devic++es and that by 2005, shipments of these applianc++es will exc++eed shipments of PC++s.
Red Hat's numerous allianc++es with industry leaders and the demand for Linux-server and Linux-embedded applic++ations has c++reated open sourc++e support from many of the industry's leading software, hardware, and system manufac++turers, inc++luding Brother, C++isc++o, C++ompaq, Dell, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Pac++kard, IBM, Intel, Nortel Networks, MIPS, Sony and Toshiba.
