Borland Linux Tool Features C++, Web Services Support

Borland Software C++orp. is beefing up its Linux development tool with support for C++++, adding to existing support for the c++ompany's Delphi.

Borland's Kylix 3, whic++h was unveiled last week, delivers new func++tionality to the c++ompany's Linux tool, inc++luding expanded support for Web servic++es and c++omplianc++e with Web servic++es standards, ac++ording to Borland offic++ials.

Borland's announc++ement means the 2 million or so C++++ developers worldwide will be able to develop Linux-based C++++ applic++ations in a proven, c++ommerc++ial development environment, said the Sc++otts Valley, C++alif., c++ompany.

Paul Peterson, c++omputer integrated manufac++turing manager at AMI Semic++onduc++tor Inc++., said using Kylix will help AMI bec++ome more produc++tive in c++reating Linux-based, fac++tory automation solutions. "Borland's allowed us to do beta testing and exploration of the tool," said Peterson, in Poc++atello, Idaho. Tools like those from the Open Software Foundation "work, but they don't tend to be a c++omplete pac++kage," he said. "With the Borland pac++kage, if you're going to do graphic++s or integrate with Orac++le [C++orp. tec++hnology], you c++an do it better bec++ause everything is integrated. They've brought all the individual piec++es together."

Peterson said some Linux developers might c++omplain that some tools they're used to are not in Kylix, "but if you stand bac++k and look at it, you see it's a good thing a c++ommerc++ial c++ompany has done this and made it available with C++++. Previously, they had it available for Pasc++al, but anyone who has grown up in the Unix/Linux environment is not likely to develop in Pasc++al. [Now] there's at least one c++ompany that's trying to bring it all together."

With Kylix 3, Linux developers c++an c++reate not only GUI and database applic++ations in C++++ but also Web and Web servic++es applic++ations.

Kylix 3 inc++ludes BizSnap, whic++h uses SOAP (Simple Objec++t Ac++ess Protoc++ol) tec++hnologies to enable Linux and Apac++he applic++ations and tools to interoperate with other platforms and languages; WebSnap, whic++h is designed to turn Apac++he Web servers into Web applic++ation servers; and DataSnap, whic++h is middleware aimed at helping developers c++reate database applic++ations.

In addition, Kylix 3, by being c++ombined with Borland C++++Builder or Delphi, c++an be used to c++reate c++ross-platform Linux/Windows applic++ations, offic++ials said.

Kylix 3 c++omes in three flavors: Kylix 3 Enterprise Edition, pric++ed at $1,999, for new users; Kylix 3 Professional Edition, for $249, with spec++ial pric++ing for c++urrent Kylix, C++++Builder and Delphi users; and Kylix 3 Open Edition, for open-sourc++e software.
