Xandros signs Linux distribution agreement - Brief Article
Corel Corp. has finally found a buyer for its Linux distribution.
Newly formed Xandros Corp. has signed a strategic licensing agreement giving it access to Ottawa-based Corel's Linux desktop OS and related technologies for the next 18 months.
Xandros has secured a US$10 million capital influx from N.Y.-based Linux Global Partners (LGP), a Linux-specific investment firm. Xandros, to be headquartered in Ottawa, made a US$2 million investment in Corel, which will also receive a small equity stake in Xandros and LGP.
Rene Schmidt, Corel CTO, said the licensing deal will allow the Linux distribution to grow to its full potential while allowing Corel to focus on its core strengths. He said enterprise customers were telling Corel that they were looking for a complete Linux solution. "We recognized that Corel could not provide the focus, so we began searching for partners."
The Xandros distribution is scheduled for release in the coming months.
