S3 to offer graphic support for Linux - Corel-S3 pact, marketing Diamond Fire GL driver for Linux - Company Business and Marketing - Brief Article
OTTAWA--Corel Corp. and S3 Inc.'s Professional Graphics Division have entered an agreement the two companies claim will deliver 2D/3D graphics to the Linux desktop.
A new 2D Linux driver for the Diamond Fire GL series, starting with the Fire GL1 professional graphics accelerator, is available for download at www.firegl.com. It will also be bundled in the Corel Linux OS, beginning in the spring. According to Corel the Fire GL1's 2D Linux driver also supports software versions from Red Hat Software and SuSE, Inc.
The 3D Linux driver version for the Diamond Fire GL1 is planned for the first quarter of this year for inclusion within Corel Linux OS.
The new 3D driver will include an implementation of OpenGL, also an open standard, as a 3D API for Linux.
Using IBM's first graphics chipset for the Windows NT platform, the Diamond Fire GL1 accelerator delivers a 256-bit engine for Windows NT. Available in PCI and AGP configurations, the Diamond Fire GL1 comes with 32MB of memory and is retail priced at $995. Additional information is available at www.firegl.com.
