SCO upgrades UnixWare 7, adds Linux support - Santa Cruz Operation's operating system - Product Announcement
Santa Cruz Operation Inc. (SCO) has introduced release 7.1 of its UnixWare 7 network operating system, which comes complete with an integrated Webtop. The company also introduced UnixWare 7 Business Edition, for small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), and UnixWare 7 Departmental Edition.
The Webtop is based on SCO Tarantella technology and is a new, browser- based interface that lets server-based applications and server administration functions to be securely accessed from a browser, according to the company.
Among the new features and enhancements of the new UnixWare version are added reliability, support for Linux applications, enhanced interoperability, and new file, print and backup services.
The company says that the new version now allows for the access to server-based applications from any Java enabled browser or Java workstation. They can also be accessed from "all the client devices already supported by UnixWare systems."
The business edition includes an integrated Web server, unlimited e- mail mailboxes and bundled streaming audio and video, the company says.
SCO also announced new levels of system availability, using the SVR5 kernal to maintain over 10,000 hours mean time between software stops (MTBSS), according to a press release. The UnixWare 7 line also serves as a path to 64-bit computing on IA-64 archictecture.
The company has also added Linux and Open Source support to its UnixWare 7 offerings. A new open licence software supplement (OLSS) formerly known as Skunkware is now available for free and includes open source code for over 180 applications, including Lxrun, the binary and source of UnixWare 7 technology for Linux applications. Free licences for UnixWare 7 and SCO OpenServer Unix systems are also available for non-commercial use. The supplement can be downloaded from SCO's Web site.
In related news, SCO launched its Vision2K product earlier this month. The package includes a suite of Windows to Unix integration products and adds two-way file sharing.
"Files can be shared with Windows desktop users from a central location, and important new or updated files can easily be distributed to users," the company said in a statement.
UnixWare 7 Release 7.1 will be available March 19, with suggested upgrade pricing from previous UnixWare 7 configurations at US$299. UnixWare 7 Business Edition costs US$1,399.
