Top Tip: Remote access, terminal service in Linux?

Tips used for Top Tips come from the ExtremeTech forum and are written by our community.

Question from shiuhrong "I am using Redhat Linux Advance Server version 2.1. Is there any build in remote desktop or terminal service kind of software or services in Linux except VNC?"

Answer from akaBeaVis "your best bet for this project and perhaps many future linux learning excursions is to start with the linux documentation project (tldp.org) and look for a howto on remote X applications, that is how i got mine working. the howto is quite well written and complete and as such there's no need for me to re-write it here as i would not do as good a job. alternatively, you can do a search on X over SSH or something similar. i would have to ask you though: what's wrong with VNC? I use it daily to administer 2 headless boxes running linux and i've had no problems with it. what experiences have you had with vnc that were bad? "

Answer from arb123 "As has already been mentioned, a secure shell connection is probably the best way to go. Ensure sshd is running on the target Linux box. It doesn't need to be running X (even if you want to run GUI apps remotely). You can connect using the ssh client. To connect from a command line environment:

ssh -l username name_or_ip

To connect from an X environment:

ssh -l username -X name_or_ip

To connect from Windows, install Cygwin."
