Partitioning - Partition Commander 6.0

It doesn't have a sporty, easy-to-use interface like PartitionMagic 6.0's, but at less than half the price, V Communications' Partition Commander 6.0 is adequate for occasional partition management. It has a number of valuable features, such as its BackStep wizard for undoing partitioning and the Personal Edition of System Commander, an adept boot manager for multiple operating systems. Still, we prefer PartitionMagic, especially for Microsoft Windows NT or 2000.

Partition Commander installs on Windows 95, 98, and Me, but the program always runs under DOS and must use a boot disk to operate on Windows NT or 2000 or any non-Windows operating system. A further limitation under Windows NT and 2000 is that the operating system must be installed in a primary FAT partition or a FAT32 partition smaller than 8GB. Many Windows 2000 and NT installations use NTFS partitions.

The DOS interface is hardly slick, but it doesn't preclude all GUI elements: You can still use the mouse, for example. More important, Partition Commander goes to some lengths to help novices. The key tool here is the Partition wizard, which starts with a dialog, asking what you want from partitioning—more disk space, faster access, better organization, or an additional operating system. Partition Commander then guides you through further details and can automatically determine and execute an optimum partitioning of the drive. If you're dissatisfied with the partitions, the BackStep wizard can reverse most types of partition changes. You can also make a safety disk for recovery in case of a power outage during partitioning.

Version 6.0 adds important support for resizing Linux and NTFS (Windows NT and 2000) partitions. For experts, there's a manual partitioning mode, plus an excellent new partition editor with a graphical view of existing partitions and the tools to make almost any kind of modification.

For working with multiple boot partitions, Partition Commander includes V Communications' System Commander Personal Edition, a junior version of the highly regarded System Commander 2000.
