If Sony's PlayStation 2 Linux Kit was a little too pricey for your tastes at $200, it's recently experienced a bit of a price drop. The complete hardware and software package for installing the open-source operating system on your PS2 is now available from PlayStation.com for only $99.99.

The Linux Kit containa a 40-gigabyte HDD hard drive, a broadband-only Network Adaptor, a VGA cable for connecting the PS2 to a VGA monitor, a mouse, a keyboard, and the software needed to install the PS2 version of GNU Linux to the hard drive. Once PS2 Linux is installed the HDD becomes unusable for any games like Final Fantasy XI, but you'll be able to download programs written to run on PS2 Linux, or create your own homebrew software and share it with other users.

A fair amount of technical ability is naturally necessary to get the most out of the Linux Kit, but now that the price threshold has dropped so precipitously, some hesitant hobbyists may be willing to take the plunge. To check it out, head by PlayStation.com.
