CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc. retrieves invaluable particle accelerator data for University of Glasgow; - CBL's understanding of Linux and RAID arrays

ARMONK, NY and SAN DIEGO, CA, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc. (http://www.cbltech.com/), a leading international provider of computer data recovery services, has recovered 500GB of extremely valuable research data for the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Glasgow following a drive failure, saving the university a great deal of time and expense.

"There was no warning of the data failure and both the drive and controller were relatively new," says Ken Livingston, Research Fellow at the Department. "We tried some basic recovery techniques such as swapping out controllers, but the RAID level we had would not allow for even a partial recovery."

The gigabytes of data were the results from a series of tests using a particle accelerator and would have been extremely difficult and expensive to reconstruct as no single complete backup of the data was available.

Livingston contacted CBL to discuss the situation and after he was satisfied CBL had a strong understanding of both Linux and recovery from RAID arrays, the disk was express couriered to CBL UK offices in North Shields, Tyne & Wear.

"Even modern drives will eventually fail," says Frank Priest, Director of Engineering for CBL. "But we have been providing recovery services for more than 10 years and it is rare that we are not able to recover a good portion of the data from any type of disk."

The UK CBL lab operates a class 100 clean room environment to ensure the integrity of hard drives and data throughout the recovery process.

Working on a "No Data, No Charge" basis, CBL managed a 100 per cent data recovery on the drive, which was returned to the university within five days.

"I am very satisfied with CBL. There was no drama or fuss; they just got on with the job and didn't charge us a fortune," adds Livingston. "I would recommend them to others in a similar situation."

Subsequent to the drive failure and recovery, the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Glasgow has implemented and migrated data to a full RAID-5 redundant disk array.
