* RSL COM FOCUSES ON b2b MARKET
RSL Com has sold 70 per cent of its consumer mobile subscriber base to BT Cellnet, raising several million pounds to reinvest in its UK national and new business services, including the rollout of broadband Internet and bundled IP products. RSL Com intends to ramp up capacity on its UK 1,200km fibre network, rollout a broadband DSL Internet product to small businesses and launch a range of new value added IP services to the corporate market.
* WORLD ACCESS COMPLETES ACQUISITION
World Access, provider of telecommunications services to retail customers in the UK under the NETnet brand, has completed its acquisition of WorldxChange Communications. The integration of WorldxChange has been underway since 2000 and gives NETnet a substantial base of retail revenues in the UK and other European markets.
* SIMOCO GETS ITS MAN
Simoco Digital Systems has been awarded a turnkey contract worth in excess of 6.5m [pounds sterling] to supply a TETRA radio system for the Isle of Man. Sixteen different government departments on the island including Emergency Services, Utilities and other public safety organisations will use the new system which is slated for service during 2002. * FIRSTNET INSTALLS DYNACACHE
InfoLibria has installed its DynaCache network caching solution at ISP, Firstnet. By installing InfoLibria's DynaCache system on the backbone of its main network, Firstnet can help serve its ADSL customers and establish a platform to provide streaming media services during 2002. InfoLibria's DynaCache line is designed for deployment at multiple locations across a network, where its distributed intelligence can be used to provide new services for service providers and companies.
* END-TO-END IP BACKBONE DEAL SIGNED
Plans for a complete end-to-end IP backbone in the UK have been ratified as Lattice subsidiary, 186K, signed a 75m [pounds sterling] deal with Nortel Networks. Nortel will embark on a two-year plan to build and implement the network based on 10Gbps DWDM optical transport. 186K then plans to roll out a wide range of IP-based e-commerce, telecom and ASP hosting solutions as well as becoming an IP carrier's carrier.
* MARCONI CHOSEN FOR BT CENTRAL OFFICE
Marconi is to set up a central office for BT in London as part of a large-scale integration and consolidation project by BT. The total value of the project could reach up to 30m [pounds sterling] in outside plant equipment sales. As part of the three-year contract, Marconi will provide its CODS2 central office distribution system including R710 connector blocks, 2380 line terminal blocks and 5-pin protector modules.
* POWERFUL LINK FOR COMMUNICATIONS
Vodafone's existing mobile phone coverage in the Highlands and Islands will be extended following an agreement with Scottish and Southern Energy which will make their existing 1,000 communications sites throughout the North of Scotland and the South of England available to Vodafone. The power company will also give access to 10,000 pylons in these areas.
* ANITE SIGNS UP WITH DELTA
Anite has completed a systems integrator partnership with DELTA, the developers of NetQUAD Network Modelling software suite. Under the agreement Anite will become the partner of choice for all NetQUAD installations in the UK, providing consultancy, integration and support services in the UK.
* FREETIME PLEDGES MONEY FOR CHILDLINE
Manchester-based Freetime Communications, has so far raised over 1,000 [pounds sterling] for ChildLine North West. Freetime began raising money for ChildLine -- the UK's free, 24-hour helpline for children in trouble -- in April 2000, with both customers and staff donating voluntarily on a monthly basis.
* NORWEB WINS ACCIDENT CONTRACT
Norweb has won a 1.2m [pounds sterling] contract to provide The Accident Group, a claims recovery company, with a new voice and data network which incorporates a 400-strong call centre located in Manchester. Norweb will provide a 360-channel ISDN connection to handle the expected daily 5,000 incoming and outgoing calls. The contract also includes a 34Mbps leased line linking the Group's web server to the Internet.
* QUINTEL AIMS TO HALVE NUMBER OF ANTENNAS
An agreement between the Rotch Group and DERA (the research and technology arm of the Ministry of Defence) could lead to a reduction in the number of radio masts and antennas currently in use throughout the UK. The project, Quintel (UK) Ltd, will allow holders of 3G licences to combine services via new technology currently in development by DERA enabling each antenna to receive up to five radio signals at once.
* INTEROUTE DONATES 100,000 [pounds sterling] TO UNICEF
Interoute has announced that Roger Moore (UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador) has received a donation worth 100,000 [pounds sterling] on behalf of UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) from pan-European telecommunications company, Interoute. Interoute's Chairman and CEO, Ohad Finkelstein, presented the cheque at the Sheraton Park Tower Hotel in London.
* GETTING TO THE NETEGRITY OF E-COMMERCE
Netegrity says that over 200 companies have joined the initiative to promote its Security Markup Language (S2ML) as the standard for enabling secure e-commerce transaction using XML. Companies including Cisco and Sun Microsystems hope to establish S2ML as the common language for sharing security services whilst engaged in b2b and b2c transactions.
* PURCHASING PROFESSIONALS ARE DRIVING PROCUREMENT
A survey by Dynamic Markets targeting early adopters of e-procurement reveals that it is the purchasing department and not the IT director leading the implementation of e-procurement in the UK. The research commissioned by TomorrowFirst, interviewed 50 heads of purchasing and found that 98 per cent believe it is important for an e-procurement vendor to employ professionals with relevant purchasing expertise to design and implement e-procurement solutions. Over a third believe that this is essential.
* NORTEL SPEEDS UP 3G UMTS WIRELESS MODEM
Nortel has signed agreements under which both Sierra Wireless and Xircom will independently develop 3G wireless modems based on the UMTS standard. Sierra and Xircom both plan to develop their multi-mode UMTS/GPRS wireless modems in products such as PC cards, Compact Flash cards and embedded modules. Nortel plans to help fund these developments and plans general availability in the first half of 2002.
* CELLEXCHANGE FORMS ALLIANCE WITH PRIMUS
CellExchange has joined up with Primus to deliver next-generation wireless application services over Primus's C3 (Collaboration-Content-Commerce) Infrastructure and the Global Application-Intelligent Network. The services, which offer software, hosting and maintenance, have already been taken on by Ciena.
* NETONOMY FOR 3G OPERATORS
Netonomy and EHPT have joined together to offer a customer care and billing solution specifically for the next generation of wireless operators.
* TELIA IC EXPANDS IP BACKBONE
Telia International Carrier is to expand the bandwidth of its European IP backbone by deploying Ericsson's packet backbone network solution. "One of TIC's goals is to become the third largest carrier in Europe by 2003," says Lars Rydin, CEO. "This deal will enable us to offer IP backbone traffic to our customers in Europe with even higher quality and bandwidth." Telia, Ericsson and, Juniper Networks, have also signed a partnership agreement for the development of advanced IP services geared towards the international wholesale, resale, and retail markets across Europe.
* BT LAUNCHES AFFILIATE PROGRAMME
BT Indirect Channels has launched a new programme for selected affiliates to sell a range of products via their websites. The programme allows new partners to pick and choose the products that they promote selecting those best suited to their audience.
* NEWBURN FLIES WITH NEW CONTRACT
Newburn has won the contract for British Midland airways' entire telecoms and network service operation. Under the multi-million pound contract Newburn will take care of British Midland's Internet and voice and data requirements across the UK and Europe. * ERICSSON APPOINTS UK DISTRIBUTOR
Ericsson has appointed a UK distributor for its BusinessPhone PBX, DECT Business Cordless Systems and IPBX WebSwitch products, The new partner, Norwood Adam Distribution, will supply to the SME market via a network of dealers and will also offer sales and technical support services on the Ericsson range.
* E-VITA TEAMS UP WITH GUERNSEY TELECOMS
e-Vita, a subsidiary of European Telecom, has won a contract with Guernsey Telecoms for the supply of its electronic prepay terminal, the eV1500. e-Vita will install the terminals in over 50 of Guernsey's retail outlets.
