QA These days, it seems that everyone has a cell phone. But with so many companies making "special offers," the choices can get confusing. How do I know when I'm getting a good deal?

Good question. And you're right--the options can be overwhelming. With increasing competition in the market, as well as different standards for voice delivery, don't expect the confusion to end anytime soon.

First, you need to consider the type of caller you are and decide what you really need. If you'll be using your phone only for emergencies, you might want to choose a plan on the low end, say, $20 per month for fewer than five calls per week. If, on the other hand, you regularly burn up the phone lines, you'll need a plan that offers more airtime.

If phone features are important to you, then it's a good idea to shop around for the best combination of price and options. Again, the key is to figure out what you really need--not just now, but in the future. The plan, like the phone you choose, should be able to grow with your needs.

If you're still unsure, start with a visit to the providers' Websites; for example, both AT&T and Sprint provide a Plan Advisor to help you evaluate your needs.
