Cellular carriers using prepaid offering to tap new segments
The following chart summarizes the prepaid cellular service plans offered by North American cellular carriers whose primary business has revolved around credit-based subscriptions. The prepaid avenue has received a tremendous amount of attention in the last year or so - as evidenced by the large number of vendors, startups and carriers getting in on this service offering.
MPN has been keeping tabs on manufacturers of debit phones and switch-based platforms as well as service bureaus offering carriers an avenue into tapping a variety of prepayment-oriented market segments. In addition to the carriers listed below, companies like Cellexis International Inc., Go Wireless International Ltd. and American Cellular Rental have developed their own service offerings to attract customers to cellular service.
A number of carriers have not introduced a prepaid cellular service but are seriously considering doing so, including AirTouch Communications Inc. [ATI], AT&T Wireless Services Inc. [T], and Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile (BANM) [BEL & NYN]. BANM has acknowledged that it is conducting a trial.
In related news, debit cellular phone manufacturer Telemac Cellular signed an agreement recently with Shared Technologies Cellular Inc. to sell its debit phones through Shared Technologies' distribution channels.
