efolkMusic.com Announces Launch Of Multi-Pak MP3 Sales: Key Is Realistic Pricing
"The cd model for mp3 pricing is not working;" efolkMusic CEO and
founder Chris Frank says, "people are not paying 99 cents+ for an mp3
single. It's as if somebody in a boardroom was trying to figure out
a way NOT to sell digital downloads! We want to find a price point
that will entice people into downloading, not discourage them."
efolkMusic.com is a fast growing Internet mp3 and cd sales and artist
promotion site, serving the folk, bluegrass, and Celtic market with a
filtered selection of free and for sale downloads and cds. They
will roll out "mp3 Multi- paks" in March, designed to encourage downloading
in this emerging market. Retail price will range from $4.95 for 10
downloads to 12.95 for 50 downloads, and the customer will be able to
easily download a few songs at a time until their multi-pak is used
up. "We reduce small- transaction credit card charges, and the customer
spends less time at a shopping cart- just click and download," Frank
says, but well let you know when you need a new multi-pak, you can
be sure.
Frank is familiar with the folk music "industry". A working musician
for 25 years, Frank has played with the Tony-Award winning Red Clay
Ramblers for the past twelve years. He started efolkMusic initially
as a way for the Ramblers to keep in touch with their fans when the
band was not touring, and realized that many fellow musicians could
also benefit from a site dedicated to their under-serviced niche, and
that users could benefit from a "discriminating" catalog. "There are
plenty of non-discriminating mp3 sites out there." Frank says. We
discriminate, helping our users find the good music.
The folk music market, including bluegrass, gospel, Celtic, and roots
music, accounts for about 2% of the overall music market, and has
been under-serviced by a mass-market oriented recording industry.
Artists who sell small quantities are inevitably the first to be
removed as retailers restock, an economic and not an artistic
decision. The result has been a shrinking selection of folk music in
traditional retail outlets. Frank sees an opportunity for "leveraging
the infrastructure of the internet" to reverse this trend.
"It's very interesting, how virtually every independent artist is
telling me 'Let's try it, we've got nothing to lose', and almost
every small/medium size label I talk to is says 'We're not sure what
we are going to do...we are waiting to make any decisions...' I go
along with Strauss Zelnick (BMG CEO), believing 'all spinning formats
will be replaced by chip-based products, within two or three years.'
That may be optimistic, but then, Im an optimist- were going for
it.
