Yahoo! Internet Life Examines "Free-for-All" In Online Music Special
Yahoo! Internet Life's August issue focuses on one of the most
exciting, yet heavily debated aspects of the Internet revolution -
online music. A series of articles take a candid look at the issues
surrounding services like Napster and MP3.com, and includes
interviews with artists who fight for and against the free exchange
of online music, including Alanis Morissette, Chuck D and Aimee Mann.
Let's Put it All on The Table
The centerpiece of the online music special is a spirited roundtable
composed of interviews conducted by David Grad featuring the leading
figures in the online music debate, including the founders of Napster
and its UK counterpart, Freenet; Hilary Rosen, president of the
Recording Industry of America (RIAA); and musicians such as Alanis
Morissette, Chuck D and Todd Rundgren. Below are some of the
highlights:
CHUCK D, RECORDING ARTIST: "You'd like to say that the music is the artist's,
but it isn't, because the copyrights and masters are controlled by
company."
DANNY GOLDBERG, PRESIDENT AND CEO, ARTEMIS RECORDS:
"I was a hippie, and there were a lot of things I liked about it. But
I remember the radical hippies who were saying, 'Music should belong
to the people' to Jerry Garcia, and he said 'Where were the people
when I was practicing my guitar?'"
TODD RUNDGREN, RECORDING ARTIST AND FOUNDER, PATRONET
"I think what really drove [Napster] was profound ignorance of the
rights of people who write a song or book or anything else."
IAN CLARKE, FOUNDER OF FREENET
"Censorship is the attempt to prevent people from communicating, and
under that definition, copyright is censorship."
AIMEE MANN, RECORDING ARTIST "It's kids versus the damn musicians, the people
you supposedly like, whose music you listen to."
JOHN FLANSBURGH, MEMBER, THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS
"One thing that's unfortunate about Metallica being the spokesman for
the musicians' side of things is that their example is so singularly
unusual. It is sort of like the Mighty Thor representing you at the
UN."
SHAWN FANNING, CREATOR OF NAPSTER "Fear stems from ignorance, and when a new
technology comes out there is some fear, some fighting, and
ultimately they learn how to incorporate the technology into their
model, and things are settled peacefully."

Musical Success Stories of the Internet Revolution
If an artist had six songs in the Top 40 at the same time, you would
assume that he or she would be a household name. What if that artist
was Bassic? In the music world today, the Top 40 goes beyond Casey
Kasem to sites like MP3.com where artists can build a fan base, and
even sell some music. Bilge Ebiri and Ed Lovett take a look at
musicians whose careers were launched by the Internet.
Bassic, who has sold more than 2,000 CDs on MP3.com, is not worried
about his music being distributed for free on Napster: "I believe
that it comes back to me in the end somehow." Fisher, a duo that used several
sites to distribute their music, decided to "take the indie leap of
faith and release our own product - just to find out if we totally
sucked or not." "In some ways, Red Delicious was a victim of the Net's hype
machine. 'The hype somehow turned the labels against us,' adds
singer Sara Wallace. 'They've all heard of us, but they don't like
anything they haven't found for themselves.'

The Online Fleecing of Seniors As the older generation has discovered
the Internet, scam artists have located these "surfers," cashing in
on seniors' online inexperience. Alissa Quart looks at some of the
rip-offs practiced on retirees along with expert advice to help
prevent this growing problem. "Seniors think of the Web as media, and thus
close to truth," says Patty Aftab, executive director of CyberAngels,
an online volunteer crime-fighting group. "Older people are no longer
willing to sit at home doing nothing. They want to keep their minds
busy," says Adrienne Oleck, a business-practices lawyer for the AARP. "Use
the Web as a fraud-fighting tool: Do keyword searches on the names of
the companies and their officers."

Mikki Halpin, author of The Geek Handbook, dissects differences in the
"new New Economy" and provides a useful chart describing the
differences between the Old Geek, The Chic Geek and the New Geek.

takes an intimate look at the two leading Internet-based delivery
services, Kozmo.com and Urbanfetch. Done in the spirit of George
Plmpton's new journalism style, Pollack slides on his bike shorts and

Jerry's in one hour or less. Page 130 Companies such as Beenz.com offer
to pay you to read email and surf the Web. Sound too good to be
true? More often than not, the money doesn't add up to a hill of
beenz. Page 124
