Child Porn Sweep Hits Yahoo Japan Office
The Tokyo offices of Yahoo Japan Corp. were searched by police investigating the sale of child pornography via the Internet portal's auction Web site. ATT Teams With DoCoMo On High Speed, Multimedia Wireless

New Zealand Bank Threatens Union Web Site
New Zealand banking group, the ASB Bank, set its lawyers on to its workers' union. Bank executives apparently were uncomfortable with either the asbbankunion.org.nz site or, as their lawyers claim, the use of the ASB Bank brand in its domain name. Japan Passes Sweeping Bill Promoting E-Commerce
The Japanese government passed overarching legislation aimed at bolstering the "Information Network Society" by boosting education and Internet access and removing legislative obstacles to e-commerce growth. East Asians Attack Digital Divide

Thailand Law Society Hits Back At Microsoft
The Law Society of Thailand issued a firm rebuttal of a Microsoft lawyer's suggestions that the Thai legal system was ill-equipped to handle technology cases, and urged Thai lawyers to be wary of accepting training from foreign companies. The Supreme Court recently ruled against Microsoft with the view that the evidence admitted in a lower court was obtained improperly and through inducements. Japanese Carrier To Send Video To Mobile Phones
Japanese cellular giant NTT DoCoMo said it will launch one of the world's first commercial services piping video news, sports and entertainment to mobile phone handsets next week. DoCoMo, already a pioneer in wireless Internet services through its popular i-mode service, will offer the M-stage Visual service to its personal handyphone system subscribers across Japan. Korea.com To Offer Music From MP3.com
Korea.com, the portal site of high-speed Net access provider Korea Thrunet Co. Ltd [NASDAQ:KOREA], inked a deal with online music company MP3.com [NASDAQ:MPPP]. A report from IDC predicted digital subscriber line (DSL) will be the Internet access method of choice for 2.1 million Australians by the year 2004. The Australian Government said it will begin taking applications next month from telecom companies interested in bidding in the nation's auction of licenses for third-generation mobile phone services. About 70 percent of organizations are involved in, or considering, a move to e-procurement, said ComTech Communications. E-tailer AdultShop.com prepared to launch a US Web site after signing a deal with a California-based Net fulfillment company.
China
China's second largest telephone company, China United Telecommunications Corp. (China Unicom), picked Cisco Systems Inc. [NASDAQ:CSCO] to supply a voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) network that will range across 319 cities in China.
Hong Kong
The one-year old Anti-Internet Piracy Team of the Hong Kong Customs service said it has netted 12 suspects and proceeded in five cases against breaches of intellectual property rights on the Web. HKeducationCITY.net, a Hong Kong Government-backed online collaboration project, launched with 150 participating organizations.
India
ESymmetryx Technologies Pvt. Ltd launched a new e-marketplace business in Bangalore which will develop customized B2B systems for vertical market segments.
Japan
Japan's Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. Ltd linked up with North American wireless network giants Lucent Technologies Inc. [NYSE:LU] and Nortel Networks [NYSE:NT] to develop and test mobile phone handsets for third-generation networks. Electronics giant NEC Corp. said it would recall and exchange hundreds of NEC-brand notebook computers containing Transmeta Corp's Crusoe chip.
Korea
GTWeb Korea was launched as a new, regional B2B e-marketplace of LG Electronics, Hyundai, Dacom, the Kumho Group, and Samyang Corp. LG Electronics and Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands said they would merge their cathode ray tube businesses.
New Zealand
The New Zealand Government made rule changes aimed at speeding up its Internet-based auction of new wireless licenses. But New Zealand's second-largest Internet service provider, Ihug, walked out on the auction, saying the rules do nothing to help promote competition. New Zealand Green MP Keith Locke said that the time allotted for public submissions to a controversial bill that could allow police to hack into computers is not long enough.
Philippines
A key figure in President Estrada's cabinet who is in charge of developing and promoting IT in the Philippines went on a leave of absence prompting observers to believe the move is a prelude to resignation that could derail the country's IT roadmap. For relentlessly advocating the cause of information technology through enabling laws and initiatives, Senator Ramon Magsaysay Jr. was named Internet Man of the Year during the 3rd Philippine Web Awards held last Nov. 24.
Taiwan
Taiwan's strong semiconductor industry reportedly generated business to the tune of $13.6 billion this year, a jump of 49.5 percent on the previous year, according to Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs. Kimo.com was still the most popular Web site among Taiwan Internet users, according to a study by iamasia. The top ranking of kimo.com will come as good news to US-based search and directory giant Yahoo Inc. [NASDAQ:YHOO] which is set to acquire it. Japanese cellular giant NTT DoCoMo said it will buy 20 percent of Taiwan's KG Telecommunications Co. Ltd for NT$17.09 billion ($516.10 million).
Thailand
Thailand's telecom concession conversion panel reached an agreement with carriers on key points to ensure fair competition before market deregulation. Advance Info Service and Total Access Communication vied to become the first Thai telecom operator to offer WAP services. Lycos Asia Internet Thailand, a subsidiary of Lycos Asia, made its debut in Thailand.
Vietnam
In an effort to lure investment to the country's important, developing software industry, the Vietnamese Government offered software-makers a four-year tax break.
