The 2-ounce RCA Lyra RD1080 ($129.99 list) is the smallest device we tested, but it comes loaded with features, including 128MB of memory and a digital FM tuner that lets you preset ten stations. The Lyra also accepts SD and MultiMedia Cards to expand its memory. The backlit display is pretty small but has enough room to show song titles, artist names, play mode, and battery life. Although similar in size to the Philips Nike psa[128max, at 2.5 by 2.3 by 1.3 inches, the Lyra has better battery life, at 9 hours 20 minutes, and an FM tuner.

The Lyra lacks a full-fledged equalizer, but it comes with multiple bass and treble settings. Audio quality is among the best we've heard from players this size. The device uses MusicMatch Jukebox and works with both Macs and PCs. It's also the first to support mP3PRO, Thomson's enhanced audio codec, in addition to traditional MP3 and WMA formats. mP3PRO can store audio files in about half the space required by traditional MP3s, but it isn't widely available yet.

Be warned that you can't just drag and drop these files onto the player. MusicMatch first needs to convert them into MPY format, which slows the transfer process down and prevents you from passing your music among systems. Apart from this quirky copy protection, the Lyra is first-rate.
