SanDisk, Inventor of CompactFlash, Announces Continued CompactFlash Support for Windows-Powered Pocket PCs

SanDisk Corporation (Nasdaq:SNDK), the world's largest supplier of flash data storage products and inventor of CompactFlash(TM) (CF(TM)) memory cards, announced today the continued support of the CompactFlash standard in Microsoft Windows-powered Pocket PCs. SanDisk joined Microsoft and other Pocket PC Launch Partners today for the Pocket PC Launch to bring next-generation mobile devices to consumers and the enterprise.

By teaming with Microsoft and its other Pocket PC Launch Partners, SanDisk is helping to expand the functionality and usage of today's Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) and putting the power of the PC in the user's pocket.

"Pocket PCs," have considerably more power than traditional PDAs according to Microsoft, with a 32-bit CPU and 16 Megabytes (MB) to 32MB of Random Access Memory (RAM). With the addition of industry standard CF expansion slots, users can extend their storage and connectivity options. For example, users can take a CF card and insert it into the Pocket PC to add up to 192MB of flash storage.

"By allowing users to do more personal customization, and by providing a more powerful device than the average PDA, Pocket PCs can better meet the individual, professional and personal needs of consumers," said Nelson Chan, senior vice president of worldwide marketing for SanDisk Corporation. "Consumers will be able to use products such as SanDisk's CompactFlash cards to back-up data, images or audio and be able to use new applications with the extra storage they get from high capacity SanDisk CF cards," said Chan.

Pocket PCs have a built-in audio player that allows users to listen to their favorite CD quality, MP3 and Windows Media formatted music. On a typical 64MB CF card, users will be able to listen to one hour of playback using MP3 and two hours of musical playback using the Windows Media Format.

In addition to offering more capabilities, the Pocket PC provides the familiarity of Windows, does not require them to learn how to write in a particular way, automatically syncs the device with their PC and has an easier to read color screen. Consumers will also be able to use familiar applications similar to those available on their desktops such as pocket versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet Explorer. Users will have access to full online/offline email capabilities including the review of attachments and will not be limited to one application at a time, but instead, will be able to work on several applications at once.
