Internet Company To Launch Christmas Day; Intellibarter.com Offers Timely Solution For Unwanted Presents Trade Them

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 20, 1999
In a seemingly unusual business move, a new Internet company, Intellibarter.com, is deliberately timing the launch of its new website for Dec. 25, 1999.
Why Christmas day? The new site allows people to trade unwanted presents.
"What better time than the gift-giving holidays to kick off an online barter service?" asks company founder Patrick Tao. Intellibarter.com will offer consumers, collectors and the cash-conscious a convenient, inexpensive way to exchange goods for goods. "People can trade what they want and don't have, or have and can't use, for something else, and save money in the process," he says.
Intellibarter.com is a pioneering, low-cost alternative to auction web sites. The site is free to browse or to list items to acquire, trade or sell. To facilitate the bartering process, an automated matching agent constantly searches for potential trades and notifies users of any matches. Users must register before participating in the bartering service. Fees are nominal. Participants are charged one barter token to gain access to another user's contact information. Barter tokens sell for $0.35-$0.50 each in packs of 10. Trading is free through Spring, 2000.
Tao says the Intellibarter solution has significant advantages over existing auctions and classified ads. For instance, Intellibarter allows free listings in personal inventories and want-lists. The service lets users conserve cash and enter into goods-for-goods transactions with low-cost, fixed-price transaction fees. Users have the flexibility to field barter offers and accept or reject them as they see fit. And, Tao says, bartering eliminates collusion and market manipulation common in auction formats.
To provide secure, reliable, fast service, Intellibarter is working with Infopoint, a leading web application development company, to implement a combination of open source, scaleable technologies, including LINUX, PHP and MySQL, allowing Intellibarter to grow with the market.
Intellibarter initially will focus on collectibles, personal effects, consumer goods and leisure-related items but will expand into other markets. Intellibarter.com is planning the launch of an expert Q&A forum and supporting content services for its barter market. "We may even encourage bartering of perishables on a local or regional basis," says Tao.
