NaviSite Introduces Enhanced Version of Leading Streaming Media Content Management and Delivery Platform
Business/Technology Editors
ANDOVER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 23, 2001
streamOS(TM) Version 2.0 targets the anticipated $2.8 billion
enterprise streaming market with sophisticated reporting tools and a
user-friendly interface
NaviSite, Inc. (NASDAQ:NAVI) today announced an enhanced version of its leading streaming media management and distribution system, streamOS(TM). streamOS is a scalable, cost-effective platform that leverages multiple content delivery networks for high performance streaming content delivery. This latest version features the ability to easily deploy and manage large volumes of video on-demand and Internet broadcasts for live-events. streamOS boasts sophisticated reporting capabilities that provide users with near real-time access to detailed performance statistics, including unique stream requests, referring URLs and duration of streams.
Recent reports show strong growth potential for NaviSite's existing enterprise business model, which indicates a dramatic increase in the use of streaming media by traditional enterprise business organizations. In a report from April, 2001 Jupiter Media Metrix reported "streaming video is going to be big in the business world." Jupiter's report anticipates that business spending on streaming video technology will grow almost twenty-fold over the next four years from $140 million in 2000 to $2.8 billion in 2005.
Today, enterprise customers such as Anheuser-Busch are realizing the medium's effectiveness for attracting and retaining customers while decreasing costs and generating revenue. Anheuser-Busch recently selected streamOS as its exclusive streaming provider for on-demand videos and live Internet broadcasts at its popular www.budweiser.com site.
"Anheuser-Busch recognizes the potential that streaming media has for bringing us closer to Budweiser's adult consumers. By working with NaviSite we know we are backed by streaming experts," said Tim Schoen, vice president of presence marketing at Anheuser-Busch. "We look forward to working with this latest version to help us deliver reliable, high-quality audio and video to thousands of simultaneous users. These are key capabilities that enable us to meet and exceed our viewers' expectations."
Since its launch in October 2000, streamOS has rapidly become one of the industry's leading technology platforms for managing content distribution of some of the Internet's largest events. NaviSite's resume includes several Internet blockbusters, including streams of Hootie and the Blowfish, the re-entry of the Mir space station and Madonna's London Concert, to date the largest streamed event in Internet history.
"We have a huge competitive advantage because other streaming providers are locked into one delivery network," explained John Stewart, general manager of NaviSite's Streaming Media Group. "We utilize several content delivery partners. If one is backed-up, we simply route a client to another. It's like having your morning traffic report not only warn you where the traffic jams are, but also pick your car up and put it on a less congested road. Combining these resources allows us to handle events with massively scalable audiences, like the Madonna concert."
New features give users more options
streamOS simplifies streaming content management by allowing users to deploy, organize and manage streaming content via a browser-based interface. This latest version of streamOS includes more than 70 additional features. The operating system's Digital File Manager (DFM) allows customers to check-in files with a mere drag-and-drop operation. Other systems typically require cumbersome and complex code writing. Additionally, streamOS allows a customer to up-load one file and create several URLs for different parts of that file. For example, a presentation could feature four speakers. streamOS customers could simply encode one tape and feature the four speakers individually on the Web site. DFM also allows customers to host their own SMIL files.
A Statistical Report Manager (SRM) allows users to gather, manipulate, distribute and view, in near real-time, streaming performance statistics. This information allows businesses to rapidly analyze web traffic patterns, variations in performance and issues that may arise regarding quality of streams delivered. Other streaming providers generally take days to weeks to deliver this type of data to customers; by that time the information has lost much of its value.
Additionally, users can take advantage of the new Broadcast Relay Manager (BRM), which provides more control uploading, deploying and managing live events. Leveraging the ease of management in streamOS, the Broadcast Relay Manager does not require in-depth technical expertise allowing for rapid deployment of live Internet broadcasts. This tool also lets administrators control the permission level required to access an event's streaming files.
