OSI Hosting, IBM, and Novell Drive Open Source Revolution

DALLAS, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- OSI Hosting, the open source industry's newest colocation and dedicated server provider, has just announced its expansion to seven more locales. The company, based in Dallas, Texas, has recently signed paperwork to acquire facilities nation wide. Locations include colocation sites in Dallas and Austin, Texas; single colocation sites in Miami, Florida and Englewood, Colorado; and three separate locations in Seattle, Washington.

These locations bring the total amount of buildings to nine, ranging from coast to coast. The first location, the company's dedicated server site and corporate headquarters, is based in Dallas, Texas. The other Dallas site is a 120,000 sq ft colocation facility. The two Austin presences are also colocation facilities, one offering 93,000 sq ft of space, and the other offering 124,000 sq ft. The Miami location totals 140,000 sq ft for colocation servers, and the Englewood site is a 90,000 sq ft colocation building. The first of the Seattle sites is a whopping 400,000 sq ft, the second 100,000 sq ft, for a total of 500,000 sq ft of colocation space in the Seattle area. The third Seattle location houses OSI's Corporate Equipment Financing and Leasing Office.

OSI has teamed up with IBM, Novell, and Apple to provide servers using nothing but Open Source Software on their dedicated platform. IBM is providing both Blade and rack-mount servers in their xSeries platform. "IBM has been a great company to work with," an employee was quoted. "They are really driving the Linux industry in the right direction, and I'm glad I'm part of it."

OSI is acquiring a total of 25,000 rack-mount servers from IBM near the end of the year, to be followed by the largest known rollout of any Blade server technology. "I believe that a realization has finally hit the industry, and it's a realization that Linux is the best OS for any enterprise level customer," David Shafik, one of OSI's lead developers, commented. "In working with IBM it gives us the ability to really foster our relationship with the open source industry. It's a wonderful event when a company comes to the front and says 'Open Source is the way!'"

Agilysys, a reseller of IBM hardware, had been slated to provide all hardware to OSI and their customers. OSI had chosen Agilysys early on to maintain a product inventory within its data center confines and resell to its colocation customers, providing them with sales and support for the purchasing of new hardware; however, OSI announced today that it is currently in negotiations with another company to operate in Agilysys' stead. "I thought that Agilysys would have been a perfect fit for OSI, but sadly I was wrong," says Jason Macer, founder and CEO of OSI. "They did not perform to our expectations, or keep their promises. On some items we were promised action within two days, and three weeks later we had received only bits and pieces of the required information from the western region business director. Not returning phone calls is one thing, but this kind of behavior is another. We tried to give them every opportunity to do business with us, but they squandered all of our good will, and we are forced to choose another vendor."

Agilysys stood to be a single provider to all of OSI's nearly 1 million square feet of colocation space. "Right now we're averaging about 2.3 servers per square foot coming into the facilities. That means almost 2.5 million servers, give or take, and with companies replacing outdated computers every 4 years, Agilysys had the potential to sell almost 625,000 servers a year. We offered them a great opportunity to do business, but they couldn't get their act together," Mr. Macer finished.

Apple Computer has also hopped on board, working with OSI to deploy 1,000 Xserves powered by their Mac OS X enterprise server software, a FreeBSD- based OS, to prove that there are alternatives to closed source operating systems. "I've been a Mac user for almost 14 years, and I'm excited to be helping to deploy Xserves for dedicated hosting," says Amy Hoy, one of OSI's lead developers. "Apple's dedication to quality hasn't wavered under the direction of Steve Jobs, and Mac OS X Server is just another great example of what can happen when a prominent company embraces the inherent potential of Open Source."

Novell has provided their newest version of SUSE LINUX Enterprise Servers for the non-Apple servers, once again offering an alternative to dependency on Microsoft products. That is what OSI stands for, promotion of Open Source programming, free of monopolization of products and services.

"We really want to thank IBM, Novell and the Open Source Community, not to mention our Broker and Board member Chris Turner," Mr. Macer was heard saying to employees. "Without everyone's effort, this would not have been a possibility. We want to remember that our customers are the reason we are in business. I plan to personally speak, and have a one-on-one relationship, with them all. This goes for my employees as well, because I feel it is necessary for the big guys to know the little guys. We really are one big family, and I want my employees and my customers to know that if anything happens, they can personally contact me, and I will resolve any situation." Mr. Macer finished and then announced a hiring spree for each location to fully staff all facilities including customer service managers, customer service support, financial service individuals for a financing side of the company, technical support, network administrators, and assistants. "We want to be a family, a big family, but a good family. We want the best and we pay well for the best. We don't just hire you to staff a facility, we look at you and we know we're going to have to really spend time, money and effort on training you and integrating you, we don't take hiring lightly."

OSI Hosting offers the following exceptional services: Dedicated Servers, Virtual Servers, Colocation Servers, Managed services, and Equipment Financing and Leasing. The dedicated servers offer security not offered with shared servers, and all of them run on Linux OS-based systems, such as SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server. The Virtual Servers offer root-level access, and other desirable features often associated with dedicated servers but with less hassle and cost. Millions of dollars were invested into OSI's state-of-the- art, carrier-neutral Internet Data Centers. Each Data Center is equipped with the latest technologies and stands alone as a premier facility. OSI provides redundant hardware and network infrastructure, multi-vendor network and hardware platforms, 24 x 7 x 365 network monitoring and management, technical support, power backup, and redundant air conditioning systems. Managed services range from basic server monitoring and network configuration to fully outsourced IT solutions, with dedicated contact personnel available for you to contact 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. OSI also offers a wide variety of financing and leasing options. "If you have outdated equipment, OSI can find a financing solution for anything from servers to networking gear, and tailor it to fit your contract and budget," OSI's Director of Finance wrote. For any financing information please contact OSI directly or email finance@osihosting.net for more information.

OSI isn't stopping there. At the end of September, OSI, IBM, and Tech- Plan will team up to design and build a showroom data center facility stocked with 200,000 IBM Blade Servers running SUSE Linux. This 25,000 sq ft showroom will expand the company's capacity to better serve its

customers, and will also, perhaps more importantly, serve as a success story for the SUSE Linux operating system and IBM Blade Series. OSI, through its website located at http://www.osihosting.net/projectblade.php , has announced a contest for customers and non-customers alike, of all artistic backgrounds and skill levels, to submit their idea for this new showroom. "Already we have had design entries which look like something off of a Sci-Fi set," Mr. Macer noted. The 10 best designs for the new showroom will be announced on October 10th, a correction from the previously announced September deadline. The grand-prize winner, who will be picked on the 29th of October, will receive $20,000, an all-expense-paid trip to Dallas for two to attend the grand opening of the showroom facility, and his or her name inscribed on a plaque installed in the main facility viewing area for all who enter to see. The top 5 designers will be given the opportunity to adapt their designs into a Network Operation Center design, which OSI will use and feature in its data centers across the country.
