Screen education events




Throughout the year there are many opportunities for screen enthusiasts, media educators and students to increase their knowledge of film, multimedia and photography. This column is designed to give teachers around Australia an idea of what is happening in the realm of media/ education. This is not an exhaustive list, just the events and competitions that are deemed to be most useful to screen educators, enthusiasts and students.

Cinematheque

Cinematheque is held weekly and shows great local and international film that is not easy to find. Catering to serious addicts and occasional viewers of great cinema, you can choose from a yearly membership or four consecutive sessions, as a reasonably priced avenue to seeing thoughtfully selected film with an intellectual introduction.

Atari Diegesis Festival

April-August 2004

The Atari Diegesis Festival is a nonprofit event run by an advisory committee dedicated to giving secondary students a forum through which to present their notable achievements in media art. Our mission is to offer Australian youth the opportunity to exhibit their work to a broad public audience and to liaise with industry practitioners in a world class centre devoted to the celebration of the moving image.

SCINEMA '04

Entry deadline 4 June

During National Science Week 2004, the CSIRO in partnership with the National Museum of Australia will present SCINEMA'04. A week long program of science film from around the globe, SCINEMA'04 will screen in capital cities around Australia and New Zealand, and will tour regionally during National Science Week. What is a 'science short film'? Any film with a scientific skew. It could be a documentary, an animation, a drama. It could be totally about science, or it could take any element of science and includes it in its subject matter, dialogue or themes.

Young Filmmakers Silent Movie Production Camp

Dorrigo, 11-14 June 2004

Calling all Young Filmmakers--camera operators, directors, editors, crew and would-be film stars. The Dorrigo Film & Documentary Festival is offering the opportunity for young people 16-25, to participate in the 'Young Filmmakers Silent Movie Production Camp' over the June Long Weekend (Fri. June 11-Mon. June 14) in Dorrigo as part of their bi-annual festival.

It is a four-day journey of discovery. It's about practical skills development in film and video production, including; Script Development, Acting, Costume Design, Make-Up, Storyboarding, Sound Recording, Directing, Special Effects, Set Design, Post-Production, Editing and Subtitles while using digital cameras, audio and editing systems.

Art Play--Scratch

Upper primary workshops

Art Play is a new art space for Primary and Pre-Primary aged Children. The complex offers children the opportunity to take part in workshops with practising artists in a variety of interesting media. Located at Birrarung Marr, it is easily accessible from the Federation Square Car park.

Scratch is for upper primary aged children. Young artists can create an animation piece by scratching into celluloid. The workshop will be held across 2 venues, Art Play and ACMI.

ATOM National Conference

2-4 July

Taking the themes of 'Story: Image: Technology and Education', the 2004 Conference will be held in Melbourne over three days from 2-4 July.

The Conference will be comprised of:

* Trade displays

ATOM Awards

The ATOM Film, Television and Multimedia Awards recognize the achievements of Australian and New Zealand professionals, educators and students in thirty-one categories.

The Awards are open to students, production companies, independent filmmakers, educational bodies and producers, and celebrate the very best of Australian and New Zealand product.
